If you are a male resident of Kentucky and need Viagra to help up your "performance," you might soon need written permission from your wife authorizing your request. Not only that, a bill, sponsored by Democrat Rep. Mary Lou Marzian of Kentucky, also requires two visits to the doctor before purchasing the drug.
"I want to protect these men from themselves," said Marzian, a nurse, according to the Courier Journal.
The bill, HB 396, would also require doctors to "prescribe a drug for erectile dysfunction only to a man who is currently married" and "require a man to make a sworn statement with his hand on a Bible that he will only use a prescription for a drug for erectile dysfunction when having sexual relations with his current spouse."
Marzian's bill comes in the wake of the state passing a bill that requires women to consult with a doctor at least 24 hours before an abortion. Marzian is an abortion rights supporter and had opposed what is called the "informed consent" bill.
"Do we really want a bunch or legislators interfering in private, personal, medical decisions?" Marzian asked, adding that "this is about family values," reports Al Jazeera.
"We are very 'family values' in the Kentucky General Assembly - they are all awash in Christian family values, so that's why I put that part in there that [erectile pills] can only be used in a marital relationship," Marzian said, according to The Washington Post.
