Samsung has won plaudits when it introduced the groundbreaking dual-edge display in the Galaxy S6 line. Today, it serves as distinctive feature in a sea of rectangular smartphones, contributing to its flagship's competitive advantage. Recent reports, however, indicate that Samsung might have licensed the technology to other handset manufacturers. For instance, Chinese brands such as Xiaomi, Vivo and Huawei are said to be developing their own dual-edge devices soon.
Particularly, handset manufacturer Vivo has already confirmed that it will be launching a device called XPlay5 on Tuesday, which will sport Samsung's dual-edge display, GSM Arena reported. Like the Samsung Galaxy S7, this device is also powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, but with an impressive 6GB of RAM. So far, there is no official word yet detailing the complete hardware specifications.
Huawei has not confirmed speculations that it is building a dual-edge handset. However, the company is reportedly working on a 2K-display device that that also feature an Edge-like smartphone, according to G for Games.
The sale of the dual-edge display technology is not the first for Samsung, as Blackberry Priv has already used the company's curved AMOLED panel, Android Authority noted. It appears that Samsung is more than willing to sell this mobile component to augment the declining revenue generated by its smartphone business in recent years.
