If you're into food, chances are you've heard of Freakshow Milkshakes. They were quickly dubbed "Freakshakes" by the internet after word got out about these crazy desserts. Freakshakes are over-the-top milkshakes, and it's a trend that originated at Pâtissez cafe in Canberra, Australia. At Pâtissez, larger-than-life milkshakes are piled high with indulgent toppings like nutella, salted caramel, marshmallow, soft pretzels, donuts, whipped cream and more ice cream. They're bigger than the average person's face, and they overflow onto an accompanying plate.
Now, a cafe in Dalston, London called Molly Bakes is churning out its take on the freakshake, and they've been insanely successful.
Maria Goodman owns Molly Bakes, and she's the one who thought up the idea to start making the cafe's own Freakshakes. "We started making them because last year when I saw them on Instagram I wanted to get on a plane to Australia but didn't fancy the 24-hour flight for a milkshake! So I bought a machine and decided to make my own - we'd also just found the premises for our first shop so it seemed the logical thing to do!" said Goodman.
For those of us that are in North America, we're going to have to follow her lead and start making our own too!
The first time that the crazy milkshakes were available was in January, and a two-hour line formed outside the shop. It's no surprise that they've done well - Instagram has exploded with photos of the shakes. "They are suuuper popular, we can sell up to 120 per day," said Goodman.
The flavors that Molly Bakes offers are salted caramel, chocolate, raspberry and peanut butter. You can choose from any of the following toppings: brownies, cookies, sprinkles, cookie dough, lemon-raspberry tartlets, honeycomb or gourmet marshmallows. Everything Molly Bakes serves is made in house, from the ice cream to the syrups to the toppings.
Molly Bakes' motto is "Leave your diet at the door," which makes sense because these monolithic milkshakes spit in the face of "low fat," "low cal" and "low carb." The shop is even open late from Thursday to Saturday to accommodate the post-dinner Freakshake needs of the people.
