GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump has no ill wishes towards his ex-wife Marla Maples when it comes to her time on "Dancing with the Stars." The former model and actress was recently announced as one of the celebs who will compete on the dancing competition show's 22nd season.
Trump and Maples were married long before the businessman ever thought of running for president. The former couple first met while Trump was still wed to his first wife Ivana Trump (whom he was married to from 1977-1992). The two tied the knot at New York City's famous Plaza hotel in December 1993 in front of 1,100 guests.
"I think it is wonderful," Trump said of Maples joining "DWTS." "I am very happy for her and think she will do very well."
Trump and Maples eventually divorced in 1999 and share one daughter together, 22-year-old Tiffany.
"She was scared [about me joining "DWTS"]," Maples said of her daughter, who is studying at the University of Pennsylvania. "She goes, 'You're really doing this?' She was very, very surprised because she knows how nervous I've been about it.... Now she's happy and now she is my biggest supporter. Oh my gosh. I want her right here right now!"
For Season 22 of the popular show, Maples will be paired with professional dancer Tony Dovolani. Dovolani has already taken home the coveted Mirrorball Trophy once before - in Season 15 with Melissa Rycroft where they beat Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough and Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy.
"The cool thing is 'Dancing with the Stars' is such an incredible show that it's an escape for everybody, which is an amazing thing," Dovolani said when Maples was revealed as a contestant. "The only thing that she thinks about is dancing.... However, we are on a campaign, we are looking for votes, we do want the Mirrorball Trophy, we want to make it all the way to the end. I think she would be an incredible trophy holder and she has a perfect place to place it."
Maples did not comment on her ex-husband or his campaign, but did admit that the show was a nice distraction.
"When life gets challenging, you just have to dance right? It's amazing."
