Netflix Announces ‘Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later’

Back in the 2001 independent comedy "Wet Hot American Summer," the lovable counselors of Camp Firewood made a promise to one another. They said that they would reunite in 10 years, as Bradley Cooper's Ben said, "to see what kind of people we've blossomed into." Then, at the conclusion of the 1981-set film, you get a brief sneak peek at the 1991 reunion. Ah, artificial nostalgia at its finest.

But this particular journey isn't over quite yet. "Wet Hot" executive producers David Wain and Michael Showalter are about to provide fans with an expanded look at the reunion. Netflix announced yesterday that the pair are developing "Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later," which is set to become available on the streaming service sometime in 2017.

This isn't the first time Netflix is throwing its support behind the series. Last summer, "Wet Hot American: Summer: First Day of Camp" hit the streaming service with eight full episodes that focused on the early days of that beloved summer in Maine (the move took place on the last day of camp). "Ten Years Later" will focus on many of the counselors and campers from that year and will again consist of eight 30-minute episodes. Showalter and Wain will return as showrunners, while Wain also handles the directing duties.

Specific cast details are unknown at this time, but Wain and Showalter did manage to recruite the star-studded adult cast from the film which included Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler, Elizabeth Banks, Paul Rudd, David Hyde Pierce, Christopher Meloni, Janeane Garofalo and more for "First Day of Camp." New additions included Jon Hamm, Josh Charles, Jason Schwartzman, Kristen Wiig and John Slattery.

"I'm surprised there hasn't been way more stuff about summer camp over the years, because it is such a beautiful, forming part of life," Wain said. "I feel like it's a place that's naturally heightened every day, and naturally condensed with drama and teenage hormones, so it's just naturally cinematic, for me. So I could see continuing to go back - and, of course, with this cast."

"Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later" is expected to debut on Netflix sometime in 2017.
