NBA trade rumors on the Boston Celtics is non-stop. They've been linked to numerous rumors for the few months but none of those ever happened. Simply because many say that they are still in a rebuilding mode and have many tradeable assets to dispense in order to make a deal.
Although they got one of the biggest acquisition in free agency in Al Horford, it seems like the team is looking to find good quality players to surround him in order to contend with other teams. And one Celtics are now calling out one free agent shooting guard to come and join the team.
According to Sportsrageous, Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas just recently said in an interview that the teams need a "knockdown shooter" for additional firepower, which is pertaining to Smith type of play. He further narrated that they need "someone who can put the ball in the basket" and knock down shots.
However, there's a problem on how to acquire Smith according to the report. The Celtics don't have enough money that they could offer to Smith. About $9 million is only left in their salary cap but the versatile wingman has earlier demanded for $15 million per season to the Cavs.
Earlier reports have said that Smith and the Cavs until now did not agree to contract terms. The Cavs reportedly could only offer Smith just $10 to $12 million per year which he refuses to accept. Smith is one of the biggest instrument to Cavs success last year after winning the NBA championship.
Parent Herald also reported that Smith not only showed his shooting prowess during the Finals but also during the playoffs as well. He has an average of 11.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.4 assists during their run in the postseason. He also led the NBA playoffs in three-point shooting.
Adding J.R. Smith caliber to the Boston lineup will greatly help Isaiah Thomas and Al Horford equally distribute the offense of the team as per stated in the report. But even Smith's teammates in the Cavs would agree that they also want their shooting guard back into their fold.
Will J.R. Smith go to the Celtics or stay with the Cavs? Will he re-sign with the Cavs before the season begin?
