Anyone who has watched HBO's smash hit fantasy series "Game of Thrones" knows that one of the last places one would want to transport from the story into real life would be the cut-throat, back stabbing capital of Westeros, King's Landing. However, that's exactly what one town in the UK will be doing this February.
To mark the February 18 release of the show's third season on DVD, a small town in England had decided to temporarily change its name to "King's Landing" for one week. The rural village of Kings Langley in Hetfordshire, UK will be paying homage to the show's most famous city.
According to RadioTimes (via the Huffington Post), a producer for HBO's most popular fantasy mega hit heard the town's name while he was waiting for a train at London's Euston station. After that, the producer decided it might be a fun idea to promote the DVD and season four release by orchestrating a name change for the town as a bit of a stunt gimmick.
The story's King's Landing is the capital of the fictional world that the show takes place in. According to the L.A. Times, it's a far cry from the sleepy village of Kings Langley, which has a population of a little more than 5,000.
This isn't the first time that a town has changed its name to help promote or pay tribute to a television show. Hot Springs, N.M. ended up becoming Truth or Consequences, N.M., named after a popular NBC radio program of the same name. Unlike the small New Mexico town, Kings Langley will only see is name changed for one week in Feb. 2014.
RadioTimes took it upon itself to suggest a few other real-life British municipalities that could lend their name easily to a Game of Thrones-style name change. For example, the town of Winterbourne would only be single syllable away from becoming the Stark's ancestral home of Winterfell.
