‘Star Wars: Episode 9’ Release Date, Cast & Update: Will Luke Skywalker Return? Filming to Start in 2017

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" just released on Dec. 10 reaped a mix of positive reactions and optimistic critical review. While there were some that seemed dissatisfied with the stand-alone "Star Wars" film, that didn't stop fans from anticipating the next movies to be made in LucasFilm and Disney collaboration.

Recent reports indicate that "Star Wars Episode 9" filming is likely to begin in April 2017 and will be released on May 23, 2019. However, if the past is any indication, "Episode 7" was released on Dec. 18, 2015, "Rogue One" released on Dec. 10, 2016, and "Episode 8" is set for Dec.15, 2017 release. Hence, it is possible that "Episode 9" will follow the winter tradition and will be pushed back for December release.

However, according to another possibility, "Star Wars: Episode 9" may be followed by Han Solo spin-off, that is set for May 25, 2018, release, to honor "Star Wars Episode 4" that premiered in 1977, thus explaining the speculated Spring release, reported Chatt Sports Net.

As the movie is expected to begin filming for its next installment, the big question is whether Mark Hamill will reprise his role as Luke Skywalker in "Episode 9." Reports confirm that the Jedi Knight will return in the next installment as the writers weave a special story for the iconic character.

According to a report by GamesRadar, Colin Trevorrow, of "Jurassic World" fame, will direct and write "Star Wars: Episode 9." He also added that the new movie will reveal a lot about Rey (Daisy Ridley) and her family.

Other than that, the film production may also explore other stories including new alien species, an idea that has already been used in "Rogue One," and is likely to continue in future installments.

"Star Wars" universe has the potential to introduce a lot of new elements without getting into the depth of it, as it becomes easier to do that in a franchise.
