Nick Carter has countersued two women who have accused him of sexual assault. In December, the Backstreet Boys singer was sued for sexual abuse by Shannon 'Shay' Ruth, 39, claiming Nick Carter raped her in 2001 when she was a teenager and a fan of his.
Melissa Schuman, a vocalist for the band Dream, also accused Carter of rape in 2017; the claimed encounter occurred when she was 18, and he was 22.
Nick Carter's Sex Assault Allegations
Carter, who earlier disputed the charges, is now suing Ruth and Schuman in retaliation. In court documents obtained by People on Friday, it is said that the women are "opportunists" who exploited the #MeToo movement to "destroy innocent lives."
According to the lawsuit, Ruth and Schuman engaged in a five-year conspiracy to "defame and demonize Carter and otherwise damage his character to get publicity and extort money from Carter."
It is alleged that the December claims made by Ruth resulted in almost $2.3 million in losses. According to the counterclaim, Carter feels he has never met Ruth. The woman claimed in her complaint that Nick Carter sexually attacked her after inviting her onto his tour van during a Backstreet Boys performance in Washington.
Ruth, who is autistic and has cerebral palsy, says that Carter offered her a pink drink he called "VIP juice" that tasted alcoholic before demanding oral sex. In response to The Independent, Carter's attorney Michael Holtz denied any misconduct on his client's part, claiming that Ruth was "manipulated into making false charges about Nick."
Nick Carter was also accused of rape in 2017 by Schuman of the band Dream, who said that he raped her at his apartment while the two were working on a made-for-television film. Carter refuted the charges at the time, expressing astonishment and sadness at the allegations.
According to the lawsuit, Nick Carter rejects the charges once more. He maintains that he"'won't allow himself to be tainted" by the allegations, further stating that her lawsuit is the "culmination of a years-long scheme to bring him down."
Carter's counterclaim reiterates that Ruth waited years before reporting rape and that an independent inquiry yielded no criminal charges. In addition, he asserts that Ruth's civil counsel abandoned her case after analyzing the evidence, as per Daily Mail.
Nick Carter Claims Accusers Took Advantage of Aaron's Death
Carter asserts that Ruth and the Schumans took advantage of his deceased brother Aaron Carter before his death, using his conflict with his older brother to bolster their claims.
Aaron Carter, who died in November 2022 at the age of 34, allegedly understood he was being exploited, prompting him to apologize to his estranged brother and "publicly announce" that the rape allegations were lying.
Two months later, Ruth publicly accused Carter of rape during a news conference when she announced her lawsuit against the celebrity. She stated that Carter asked her inside his tour bus after spotting her waiting for an autograph and noticing her on the bus.
Ruth alleges that the celebrity lowered his pants and exposed himself to her in a washroom before forcing her to perform oral sex on him and then raping her. Ruth's attorney, Mark J. Boskovich, stated that three additional women, identified only as Jane Doe, are also mentioned in the complaint.
In addition, she alleges Carter brought her to a bed on the bus, where he allegedly resumed the sexual assault. Ruth, a virgin before the alleged attack, alleges she developed Human papillomavirus infection (HPV) due to the purported assault.
Variety reports that the Backstreet Boys' Los Angeles-filmed Christmas special has been canceled in response to the claims. On November 5, 2022, the body of Aaron Carter, age 34, was discovered in his bathtub in Lancaster, California.
No official cause of death has been determined. However, he was known to suffer from mental health issues and addictions. Nick Carter had stayed silent on the allegations, although he promoted a benefit concert for Aaron Carter on Thursday, hours before the charges were made public.
Although Nick Carter has rejected charges of rape in the past, he has never been charged with a crime. In 2017, Melissa Schuman said that the boy band member raped her in 2003. Due to the 2013 expiration of the statute of limitations, the LA County District Attorney's office declared in 2018 that it would not prosecute Carter.
