1 Dead, 2 Injured in Finland School Shooting, 12-Year-Old Apprehended

The 2 surviving victims were reportedly seriously wounded

A 12-year-old child died and two other children were injured in a shooting at a primary school in Finland on Tuesday morning.

Finnish police apprehended the gunman, who was also 12-years-old, the Associated Press reported.

The shooting took place at the Viertola school in Vantaa, a suburb of the capital Helsinki, according to the BBC.

According to the local municipality, the school has around 800 students aged seven to 15 and grades first to ninth.

It has a staff of around 90. Children had just returned to classes after the long Easter weekend.

A police spokesperson told Reuters that the victims were taken to hospital for treatment. The other two were seriously wounded, said Chief of Police Ilka Koskimaki from the Eastern Uusima Police Department. Their ages were not released.

"The immediate danger is over," Viertola school principal Sari Laasila told reporters, declining to comment further on the incident.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said he was “deeply shocked” in a post on X.
