'300: Rise Of An Empire' Review Roundup: Critics Say Film Is Beautifully Shot, But Suffers From Bad Writing (TRAILER)

"300: Rise of an Empire" reviews are in and critics weren't too impressed by the film.

Zack Snyder didn't direct the second "300" film and reviewers aren't complaining about the directorial style, but they are claiming the storyline and dialogue are a flop. Check out what reviewers had to say about the film below.

IGN rates the movie a 7 out of 10:

"A 300 movie isn't about clever dialogue and cultured performances, but rather large, loud spectacle, and Rise of an Empire delivers throughout. It's a relief, as helmer Noam Murro's only previous credit is romantic comedy Smart People, making him an unusual choice for the director's chair. Thankfully, he turns Rise of an Empire into the most spectacular film of the year thus far, with stand-out sequences including a fiery sea battle that makes the jaw drop, and a slow-motion fight involving father and son that has to be seen to be believed. Indeed even a love scene is filmed like a brawl; a literal battle of the sexes that's more erotic than it has any right to be."

The San Francisco Chronicle says film is a "let down:"

"In the end, if "300: Rise of an Empire" is not technically a sequel, it's a sequel in spirit - an attempt to do something a second time, but with none of the same feeling, inspiration or vision. At one point, Themistokles tries to inspire his troops, and we sit back and expect some statement that might give us a glimpse of this earlier time. Instead he talks about how soldiers don't fight for a cause, but simply for the guy next to them."

Rotten Tomatoes audience viewers certify the film fresh with a 77 percent rating:

"Despite the elements of history that could be creatively portrayed within this same graphic novel universe, I was not sure what a studio was willing to do with a follow up inspired by profits form the first. To my surprise, 300: Rise of an Empire manages to deliver the familiar spectacle, while adding a more complicated story and an excitingly ferocious villain as well," one Rotten Tomatoes user wrote.
