An armed elderly California homeowner who shot and killed a robber during a home invasion was arrested on suspicion of murder.

The unidentified 77-year-old man remained in custody as of Tuesday as the Alameda County district attorney weighed pressing potential charges, authorities said, KTVU-TV reported.

The DA did not immediately respond to HNGN's request for comment.

The deadly shooting unfolded Monday evening when two men and a woman broke into the Oakland, California, home, authorities said. One man was armed with a crowbar.

The homeowner responded by firing off several rounds.

When officers arrived, they witnessed one of the male suspects unresponsive with several gunshot wounds, while the homeowner used a stolen revolver to hold the female suspect at gunpoint, court documents said, the outlet reported.

The woman told police the homeowner shot her friend, who was pronounced dead on the scene, authorities said, according to KPIX-TV and KNTV-TV.

The homeowner and the other male robber were arrested.

The DA has until Thursday to decide whether to press charges against the homeowner or if the fatal shooting was justified.
