People are seen gathering on the beach in hopes of cooling down amid a major heatwave this Fourth of July holiday weekend.

California is going to bake as it rides through a heat wave over the holiday weekend.

The hottest temperatures were expected on Friday and Saturday.

Desert temperatues were expected to top 115 degrees. Moutain temeratures could reach 112 and valleys could see highs hitting 108. The coastal plain temperatures were expected to stay in the 90s.

"Limit outdoor activities during times of peak heat," the National Weather Service warned.

Christina Coffey, of Sacramento, told the Associated Press that it's just as miserable indoors, even with the air conditioning, while others wait in long lines for ice cream, hoping to cool down.

Many are flocking to beaches in an effort to beat the heat and enjoy cooler coastal waves.

Temperatures in some inland areas may set new record highs.

Statewide heat advisories are in effect.

Around 134 million people in the U.S. are under alerts as an "extremely dangerous and record-breaking" heat wave broils much of the country, according to the National Weather Service.
