A 10-year-old boy died from a "heat-related medical emergency" during a hike with his family in Arizona as the temperatures soared into the triple digits, according to a report.
The boy, who recently moved to Phoenix from Missouri, embarked on a hike with relatives around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday on South Mountain.
Fire crews responded to calls of a person becoming overheated around 2 p.m. and transported him off the mountain to a local hospital by helicopter, AZ Family reported.
The 10-year-old, identified as Cortinez Logan, died there.
Authorities believe the boy was on the trail for several hours even as temperatures rose to around 113 degrees, the report said.
"We do have a lot of beautiful hiking trails here in the city of Phoenix and we want people to feel encouraged to use those trails early in the morning or later in the evening. Please avoid the sun at all costs. Seek shade, stay hydrated and limit your exposure to the sun as much as you can," Phoenix Fire Capt. Shaun Dubios told AZ Family.
