Donald Trump's granddaughter, speaking at the Republican National Convention Wednesday evening, described him as a doting grandpa, slammed the media for their portrayal of him and noted he is "still standing" despite the assassination attempt on Saturday.
Kai Trump, the 17-year-old daughter of Donald Trump Jr. and his former wife, Vanessa, said that she wanted to provide a side of Trump that most "people often don't see" during her surprise convention speech.
"To me, he's just a normal grandpa. He gives us candy and soda when our parents aren't looking. He always wants to know how we're doing in school," the eldest of Trump's 10 grandchildren said at the convention in Milwaukee.
She said her grandfather often calls her at school to inquire about her golf game, a sport they share, and to tell her about his.
"But then I have to remind him that I'm in school and I'll have to call him back later," she said as Trump beamed in the VIP booth.
She said her grandfather always has time for her.
"Even when he's going through all these court cases, he always asks me how I'm doing. He always encourages me to push myself to be the most successful person I can be," Kai Trump said. "Obviously, he sets the bar pretty high, but who knows, maybe one day I'll catch him."
She also turned somber when addressing the attempted assassination on Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., on Saturday.
"On Saturday, I was shocked when I heard that he has been shot, and I just wanted to know if he was OK. It was heartbreaking that someone could do that to another person," she said
"A lot of people have put my grandpa through hell, and he's still standing," she continued.
"The media makes my grandpa seem like a different person, but I know him for who he is. He's very caring and loving. He truly wants the best for this country, and he will fight every single day to make America great again," Kai Trump said.
