The ball is rolling for the "How I Met Your Mother" spinoff. While the new series has not landed a premiere date yet, several media outlets are reporting that Meg Ryan was cast to play "Future Sally," the unseen narrator and older version of Greta Gerwig's character.
As previously reported, Gerwig has signed on to play Sally, who like Ted in the original series, is searching for the father of her future children. Ryan's character is similar to that of Bob Saget in "How I Met Your Mother."
Sally, who will be going through a divorce in the series, is described as a "vibrant, messy and unpredictable "character.
In an interview with US Weekly, Gerwig said that "How I Met Your Dad" would be completely different than the original CBS comedy.
"It's going to be different than the original," she said. "When the premise of the show is that it's a young man looking for his true love, it's a very different feeling than a young woman looking for her true love. Craig and Carter are making it too, and Emily Spivey is so funny and great. She wrote for SNL for a long time, and wrote the show 'Up All Night,' and I'm in love with her."
There will be a few minor similarities like the flashback format "How I Met Your Mother" was known for. Besides Sally, the other major characters will be her "older, overachieving gay brother" Danny; Danny's husband Todd, who is also Sally's close college friend; and Sally's "sexy, flamboyant, energetic, party-girl" best friend Juliet.
Check out a brief synopsis of the pilot for "How I Met Your Dad" (provided by Screenrant.com):
"The pilot stars Greta Gerwig as Sally, a female Peter Pan who has never grown up and has no idea of where she's going in life. She has just figured out that she has nothing in common with her husband of less than a year. A breakup in inevitable, but Sally will find a solid circle of support in her friends and family, who are often too willing to give 'good' advice that can backfire badly. Meanwhile, Sally must filter out the input and decided what's best for her."
