Director Zack Snyder has unveiled the first image of Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel in the upcoming "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice."
Snyder spoke to USA Today about the production, which is currently being filmed in Detroit, Mich. The director acknowledged the historical aspect of bringing Batman and Superman together on the big screen. The two superheroes have never come together in a live-action adaptation.
"You can talk all you want about other superhero movies, but it's Batman and Superman, let's just be honest," Snyder said. "I don't know how you get bigger than that."
The first "Man of Steel" was about the beginning of Superman and the superhero finding out who he is. However, Snyder claimed Cavill is more comfortable with the character a second time around.
"We've both created this guy and we can push him around a little bit," Snyder told USA Today. "The more time I spend with Henry, the more he's Superman to me."
Though Superman has already had his solo film, it doesn't mean Snyder will be putting out a "Batman" movie any time soon. Snyder explained to USA Today Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy was a big factor in deciding where to take the "Man of Steel" franchise, but the "Batman v. Superman" movie was the natural next step for the production.
"I was in no rush to put Batman in the movie," Snyder said, "but on the other hand it seemed organic the way our story was unfolding to start to feather him in."
Snyder didn't comment on the relationship between Batman and Superman in the DC film, but admitted the "versus" in the title isn't there without purpose.
"Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice" stars Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Ray Fisher, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Jesse Eisenberg and more. The film is set to hit theaters on May 6, 2016.
