The latest "Gone Girl" trailer revealed Neil Patrick Harris in a creepy new role as Amy Dunne's past "stalker," Desi Collings.
In the novel, Amy (Rosamund Pike) was the inspiration behind the children's book series "Amazing Amy," which was created by her psychologist parents. "Amazing Amy" turned into a best selling series and attracted many people to cling to Amy. Collings was one of those alleged clingers, according to Amy's parents.
Collings first appeared when volunteers gathered to search for Amy. His name then comes up during the investigation when Amy's parents are asked if there is anyone who would try to hurt their daughter. Husband Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) eventually heads over to Collings' apartment where they discuss his missing wife.
However, Collings' connection to Amy raises alarms for Nick as he realizes his wife disappearance isn't what it seems. "Gone Girl" will be released to theaters on Oct. 3.
The film has also released four new posters of evidence in Amy's missing persons case and possible murder. Fans of the best selling novel by Gillian Flynn can also expect a different ending in the novel.
Flynn explained the rewrite during a Reddit AMA, reassuring fans why the ending needed a little tweaking:
"Tell your girlfriend not to worry-those reports have been greatly exaggerated! Of course, the script has to be different from the book in some ways-you have to find a way to externalize all those internal thoughts and you have to do more with less room and you just don't have room for everything. But the mood, tone and spirit of the book are very much intact.
"I've been very involved in the film and loved it. Working with David Fincher is pretty much the best place to start for a screenwriter. Screenwriting definitely works different parts of your brain than writing a novel. I do love that with novels, you can really sprawl out-it feels quite decadent. With screenwriting, you have to justify every choice. It's a nice discipline, but definitely not decadent."
