‘Doctor Who’ Season 8: Jenna Coleman Quits as Clara Oswald, Leaving During Christmas Special?

The Doctor may have to find a new companion because a new rumor claims Jenna Coleman is quitting as Clara Oswald on BBC's "Doctor Who." According to The Daily Mirror, Coleman will reportedly leave the show during Christmas.

"The conversations about Jenna's exit have started, and a plan is in place which is being ironed out," a source said. "By the time she leaves she will be one of the longest-standing companions ever. She has been absolutely brilliant in the role, but everyone agrees it is a part that should change after a period."

The source also said it was "very much a mutual decision" between Coleman and executive producer Steven Moffat.

"It's important to keep the series moving and fast-paced, and the time is just starting to feel right and the feeling is that it could be a perfect Christmas storyline," the source told The Daily Mirror.

Since the show's first premiere in 1963 there have been about 60 assistants. Coleman replaced Karen Gillan, who played Amy Pond. Recently the 28-year-old actress dished on the new season to The Independent and said there would be no flirting this time between the Doctor and her character.

"I always thought Matt [Smith] was so young-looking but had this older, wiser quality about him, whereas Peter is almost the opposite," Coleman told The Independent. "Somehow he has this energy that is younger. Visually, obviously, it is very different."

So how will Clara get along with the new Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi?

"We're discovering that it's much more of a turbulent relationship [between the characters]; he brings out the control freak in Clara because she can't quite pin him down," she said. "It's always an interesting dynamic with the Doctor, anyway; one moment he's your friend, and in another moment he's this weird alien, and in another moment he's being this annoying kid of toddler and you're the adult, and in the next moment he's playing the wise old grandfather."

Season 8 of "Doctor Who" premieres Aug. 23 on BBC and BBC America.
