“Captain America 3” could be the last time Steve Rodgers will wear the red, white and blue shield.
The Russo Brothers recently spoke to MTV about Chris Evan’s future in the franchise. Since the Marvel Comics passed the Captain America torch to The Falcon, rumors have been swirling actor Anthony Mackie will be taking on the role after Evans.
The directing duo explained “Captain America 3” will close a chapter in Steve Rodgers’ storyline, but didn’t confirm if it is the end of actor Chris Evans’ run as the superhero.
“[Whether this is the end] is a hard question to answer because it gets to the specific of where the narratives are going,” Anthony Russo said. “I will say this: yes, for satisfying storytelling, you want a beginning, middle and end. That’s the natural arc that we all thrive off of in narrative.”
Anthony also spoke to Movies.com about closing the chapter in Steve Rodgers’ life, claiming they are excited to get the opportunity to introduce new characters.
"We just got another incredible draft from the writers and are very excited about the film," Anthony said. "I can't divulge who is going to be in the film, but I think the fans are going to freak out when they hear about it."
The director also teased the Winter Solider could be making a return to the franchise in the third installment.
“The relationship between Cap and the Winter Soldier was never resolved at the end of the last movie,” Anthony said. “Thinking about where that relationship can go is a piece of the puzzle for us for sure. That character is a wonderfully, beautifully tragic figure in the sense of is he the world's most feared assassin or is he the world's longest serving POW.”
“Captain America 3” will be released to theaters on May 6, 2016.
