"Guardians of the Galaxy" has surpassed $500 million globally at the box-office because it's the best Marvel movie ever, according to Robert Downey Jr.
The "Iron Man" actor told The Toronto Sun the film is one of the best features he's ever seen. Downey claimed "Guardians of the Galaxy" deserved the number one spot at the box office.
"Galaxy in some ways is the best Marvel movie ever," Downey said. "And it's odd for someone with - on occasion - an ego the size of mine to actually say that!"
However, Downey claims the film wouldn't have had a blockbuster success if previous Marvel films like "Iron Man" and "Captain America" hadn't pave the way.
"We're talking about how the Iron Mans and the Thors and the Captain Americas and the Avengers movies have afforded Marvel the opportunity to essentially take what was a third-tier, minor, kind of upstart bit of potential from one of their comic books series and say: 'Look!'," the actor told the Sun.
"It's like you have a great quarterback, and his brother plays for another team, and then you say: 'Look, this is their second cousin and we think he has a great arm and he should start.' And then he goes and wins the Superbowl!"
"Guardians of the Galaxy" has earned a total of $500.5 million worldwide, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Marvel film earned $255.2 million domestically and $245.3 million internationally. Downey also attributed the success to Marvel's new parent company, Disney.
"The armature and breadth of what Disney has done in their ability to put things to market is unprecedented," the actor told the Sun.
