“Assassin’s Creed: Unity” continues to tease fans of what’s to come for its revamped co-op gameplay.
Associate Level Design Director Christophe Rossignol spoke to the game’s official DevBlog regarding the design aspect of the multiplayer mode. Rossignol explained the overall goal of “Assassin’s Creed: Unity” is to give players freedom to explore.
“If you look at the past ACs, mostly when you are playing a mission, it’s like ‘go over there, open that door, follow that guy and kill him.’ You know, it was really like breadcrumb objectives… so the first thing we did was remove those mid-path objectives so players could do what they want,” Rossignol told the DevBlog.
An important aspect of the co-op gameplay will be to align yourself with players who have skills you do not posses. Rossignol claimed combining players with different skills will allow gamers to complete objectives more easily than teaming up with people who share your strengths.
The developers combed their past multiplayers and decided it was time to “break” their own “habits” when it comes to design. Rossignol is calling the new gameplay method the “black box,” where gamers are given an objective but the freedom to complete it how ever they choose.
“We apply this to ACU by providing huge locations, both interiors and exteriors, and we give only one objective to the player… but they can have many different skills and tools, so we force ourselves to design for all the skills and tools while not requiring any specific tool to complete an objective,” Rossignol explained.
