Hairstyles 101: Do You Pass 'The Rule?' Audrey Hepburn and Emma Stone Do, Kim Kardashian and Jessica Alba Don't

Maybe you just went through a breakup. Maybe you are feeling stagnant and need to shake things up. Maybe you saw your favorite red carpet walker with a fresh bob and are just dying to try it out.

Put down the scissors, girl. Take your finger off the call button and don't bother your hairdresser at home. Go get a ruler and a pencil.

We're all for breaking fashion rules, but this time, it may be wise to follow this rule: the rule of 2.25.

International Training Director of Color Wow and Senior Stylist at John Frieda Salons UK, Giles Robinson, told the Daily Mail: 'It's all about the angles. The Rule was created by John Frieda, and it is a fool-proof guide for hair stylists to use so they can tailor the cut to make the length as flattering as possible to the face shape.

"John studied faces and saw that the angle of the jaw bone determined whether or not someone would look best with short hair or long hair. He figured out an exact, easy to understand measurement that clearly indicates whether a face is suited to long or short hair."

You don't need to be besties with Frieda (although your hair would be incredible if you were!) - Go grab that pencil and ruler we talked about before.

Place the pencil under your chin horizontally. Place the ruler under your ear vertically. Where the pencil and the ruler intersect is the measurement you use to evaluate your 'do. If the measurement is less than 2.25 inches, your face is made for short hair. (Think Audrey Hepburn's petite face.) If the measurement is more than 2.25 inches, start taking your biotin, because you are meant to be a long haired lady.

"Two A-list women that suit the chop are Katie Holmes, whose shorter jawline is perfect for a pixie or fringed bob as seen at the Met Ball earlier this month," Giles told the Daily Mail.

"Although she looks gorgeous 'old world Hollywood' with long hair, Emma Stone is another celebrity whose features are enhanced by this cut she really looks amazing with a bob."

"A few celebrities who I think the bob or crop isn't suited for include Jessica Alba," Giles continued. "Although she is always stunningly beautiful whatever her style, the bob cut doesn't complement her features, for her longer jawline, long hair is really more flattering.

"The same is true for Kim Kardashian, she recently went for the lob but she suits longer flowing locks that balance and frame her longer heart shaped jawline.

"The rule is ultimately more about who short hair suits but the stylist will take into account the desired result the client wants."
