One Million Moms, a Christian non-profit organization, is calling for the boycott of ABC's new show "The Muppets," the Wrap reported. The group asked its followers to contact ABC and demand that the show be pulled off the air, claiming that its "perverted" jokes are not family-friendly.
"ABC's new 'Muppet' Show, airing on Tuesday evenings at 8:00 pm ET/7:00 pm CT, is not what Jim Henson imagined and created," read a statement on the organization's website. "The new show is aimed at a mature, modern audience and addresses subjects not suitable for family viewing."
The statement went on to cite the "mature" range of topics that the new "Muppets" series addresses, like Miss Piggy's MSNBC interview where she "came out as a pro-choice feminist" and promoting "interspecies relationships and promiscuity."
In the revamped "The Muppets" show, ABC took the beloved 1970s puppets and placed them in a modern, behind-the-scenes documentary-style format like "30 Rock" and "The Office." The network's promos were very upfront with the fact that they were taking a more grown-up approach with the series, and One Million Moms claimed that it worries that children will stumble across the show's mature topics without their parents realizing it.
"Many parents unknowingly will let their children watch an episode only to find out its perverted nature too late, unless they are alerted ahead of time," the statement reads. "1MM and others need to get the word out to families to avoid this program at all costs."
"The Muppets" premiered last week and was one of the most-anticipated fall premieres, according to Variety. The premiere pulled in an impressive 8.9 million viewers overall.
