"Sherlock" fans rejoice! A new "Sherlock" Christmas special is on the way, and there's a trailer to prove it. The one-off special, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as John Watson, takes place in Victorian England, according to E! News.
"The stage is set. The curtain rises. We are ready to begin," Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes says at the start of the trailer. The trailer itself is a treat for fans of the series, both television and book, and has everything from a mustachioed Watson, a deerstalker hat-wearing Holmes and a foggy, mysterious London from the 19th century.
A first look of the "Sherlock" special was revealed at San Diego's Comic Con in July, as HNGN previously reported.
"We discovered there was some precedent for doing Sherlock in the Victorian era," executive producer Steven Moffat said at the time, according to Entertainment Weekly.
"When we first did Sherlock, press asked, 'How can Sherlock possibly survive in world with an iPhone?' and when doing the Victorian, the press came in and said, 'How can he do this without his iPhone?"
"It's very much the show you know, " Moffat continued. "It's the Sherlock as you know it, but in the correct era. It's one of the best ones we've made. I think it's really terrific."
"The name is Sherlock Holmes and the address is 221B Baker Street," Cumberbatch says in the trailer of the special, which appears to be a gothic and dark iteration of the series.
The "Sherlock" special does not currently have a premiere date, but it will air on BBC One in the U.K. and PBS Masterpiece in the U.S. "Sherlock's" fourth season is likely to premiere early next year.
