Thomas Johnson, a former star wide receiver at Texas A&M, confessed he killed a jogger with a machete, and stated he chose the victim randomly, according to Dallas police. He was charged with murder for the killing, which took place on Monday morning.
Johnson, 21, did not have a violent criminal history prior to the incident where he reportedly became angry and hacked his victim with a "large-edged weapon," Dallas Police Deputy Chief Rob Sherwin said, reported NBC's Dallas affiliate NBC DFW.
"It appears that Mr. Johnson picked this victim at random. It's absolutely random. He just attacked him. He told our homicide detectives that he was angry about a situation, and he just picked somebody to murder," Sherwin said.
The murder occurred along White Rock Creek Trail in Dallas. Following the incident, Johnson called 911 and at some point admitted to the killing.
During his confession he allegedly elaborated on why he was angry saying he was put out of his home.
"He stated he was put out of his home. I don't know for how long," Sherwin said, according to CBS.
Despite the confession, Sherwin believes the attack was more than just a random incident but failed to elaborate on another possible motive.
"I believe there's more to that story. It's just very unusual. It's quite shocking," Sherwin told reporters during a press conference, according to The Blaze.
Police will have difficulty discovering if the murder was truly random, since the victim was not carrying any identification and the only clue authorities have to go by is his age: mid 20s to 30.
