Dole announced Tuesday that it has issued a voluntary recall of its bagged spinach products distributed in 13 states due to fears of possible salmonella contamination.
Company spokesman William Goldfield has assured concerned parties that there have been no reports of illnesses and that the company is working with the Food and Drug Administration on the issue, according to USA Today.
Goldfield said 2,800 cases, or 33,600 individual bags, of bagged spinach were included in the recall. The potentially contaminated bags are coded A27409B & A27409A, with an Enjoy By date of Oct. 15 and UPC 7143000976.
The recall comes after a sample of the spinach yielded a positive result for Salmonella in a random sample test conducted by the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development's Laboratory Division, Food Safety News noted.
"The FDA told us about the test yesterday and we immediately began recalling the product," Goldfield said Wednesday. "I believe the FDA is going through the plant right now, and we expect to get back up and running soon."
The potentially contaminated products were distributed in Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Dole Baby Spinach is exempt from the recall.
The company has urged consumers who own the product to not take any chances and discard it. Retailers and consumers with questions have been advised to call the Dole Food Consumer Response Center at (800) 356-3111.
