An official who was filled in on the investigation of the shooting death of a northern Illinois police officer in September said authorities will declare that the officer committed suicide. The official, speaking to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity, said that the death of Fox Lake County Police Department Officer Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot would.
The Lake County Sheriff's office announced early Tuesday that it will hold a press conference on Wednesday to reveal "conclusive results" in the investigation of Gliniewicz's death, according to the New York Daily News.
Gliniewicz, a veteran who served with the police department for more than 30 years, was discovered fatally wounded on Sept. 1 after he radioed that he was pursuing three men who were conducting "suspicious activity" on foot north of Chicago, HNGN previously reported.
It was reported that the officer died while he was in the line of duty. However, the way he died had come under question, after sources said his body was discovered face down with his hand "in a gun position" and that the gun "dropped at his body."
Two shell casings were discovered 100 feet apart from each other close to his body. "There was no sign of a struggle or defensive wounds - especially one to save his own life," a source told Fox News in September.
