Colo, the world's first gorilla born in human care, turns 59 today, marking her celebration as the oldest gorilla as well. Actually she broke that record a few years back at 56, according to The Columbus Dispatch. The average life expectancy for a female gorilla in a zoo is 37, and Colo kicked that record a few decades ago.
If last year's big celebration is any indication of the festivities today, it will be a blowout. More than 4,000 people from around the world tuned in to see the live stream of Colo's turning 58, with hundreds of well-wishers at the Columbus Zoo to see it in person.
Typical woman, Colo went straight to the presents, expertly tossing out the tissue to see what was inside the gift bags, tearing off the wrapping paper to the others, and even showing off to the adoring crowd by putting the new cap she received on her head as she went for the treats. Treats on the agenda for the big day are clementines an tomatoes frozen in an ice cake, plenty of toys and the colorful construction paper chains to make it a festive day of Colo's favorites, says the Washington Times.
Her Facebook fans are plentiful with the birthday wishes rolling in today.
"Happy Birthday - I painted you and see you in my kitchen hanging on the wall every day," posted Cindy Billingsley. "Enjoyed you on my visit one cold winter at the zoo. You had such a presence that day, you were unforgettable. Hope you have a very Happy Birthday and many more."
Sheri Bond posted, "I love Colo! She gave me kisses through the glass during a visit a couple of years back. My son was with me and was petrified until he watched her play peek-a-boo with me and then give kisses through the glass. It was the absolute sweetest experience I have ever had with an animal.,, I look for her everytime we visit. Happy birthday!"
Colo has touched so many people through the years and blesses us with her wonderful progeny of three children, 16 grandchildren, 10 great- grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
