The legendary hip-hop group Run-D.M.C. will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2016 Grammys, the Recording Academy announced on Wednesday, according to Fader.
This rap trio, comprising of Darryl "DMC" McDaniels, Joseph "Reverend Run" Simmons and the Jason "Jam Master Jay" Mizell, who died in 2002, will be honored with their first-ever Grammy award despite being nominated for Best R&B Vocal Performance in 1986, mainly because a category for rap had not been introduced yet.
"I just got a call from the Grammys!! They shocked me!!," tweeted Rev Run. "We're the first rappers to get this award!! Shocked! Grateful!. God is good!!! I'm so honored to be a #GRAMMYs Lifetime Achievement Award recipient this year. Thank you to the Recording Academy!"
"Each year, The Academy has the distinct privilege of honoring those who have greatly contributed to our industry and cultural heritage," said President/CEO of the Recording Academy Neil Portnow, according to Billboard. "And this year we have a gifted and brilliant group of honorees. Their exceptional accomplishments, contributions, and artistry will continue to influence and inspire generations to come."
Other recipients of the honorary award this year will include Earth Wind & Fire, Jefferson Airplane, Herbie Hancock, John Cage, Ruth Brown, Celia Cruz and Linda Ronstadt, according to SPIN.
The 58th Annual Grammy Awards are scheduled to take place on Feb. 15 and will air live on CBS at 8 p.m. EST.
