Some areas on the East Coast are bracing for a snowstorm this weekend, as HNGN previously reported. There is still some time to make preparations before the blizzard drops, and in anticipation of a possible power interruption or getting stranded indoors, here's a checklist of what you must keep in mind if a snowstorm is coming:
1) Salt or Deicing Solution
The easiest way to melt ice on your front steps would be to heat some salt in water to pour on the surface, but you can also buy commercial deicers ahead of the storm. Be careful using these, though, as they are environmentally harmful, according to House Logic. If you do use one, pick calcium chloride over sodium chloride (rock salt). Read the labels carefully.
2) Gutter
Ideally, you should clean your gutters out by fall, or at least make sure that the downspouts aren't filled with leaves. Consider installing gutter guards later to protect from them ice damming and damage in the future. There are different types of systems with their own advantages and disadvantages. The common types include metal screens, sponge guards, mesh guards, slit covers and reverse curve guards, Dry Home notes. Contact a professional to know which will be best for your house.
3) Snow shovel and snow blower
Before you start clearing snow out, use a non-stick cooking spray on your snow shovel to make your work easier. It will prevent the snow from sticking to the shovel's surface, according to The Washington Post. You won't have to tap in between shoveling. Meanwhile, you will need gas for snow blowers, so make sure that you have enough to use. Store this in a safe area in the house.
4) Water
Stock up on water for drinking and cleaning, in case you have to be indoors longer than expected. At least have five gallons of water on standby. If you can't buy, fill your buckets or bathtubs with water at home.
5) Basic items
Put these in one accessible area and tell household members about it so that in case of power interruptions and other emergencies, everyone knows where to reach for the essentials:
-flash light
-extra batteries
-candles and matches
-more shovels
-blankets and jackets
-first-aid kit
-non-perishable foods and medication
