This May will mark the 30th anniversary of the Tom Cruise film "Top Gun," and the chances of a second film look more promising than ever. "Top Gun" producer Jerry Bruckheimer took to his Twitter account and posted a picture of him and the actor and teased the possibility of a sequel to the beloved film.
"Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2," Bruckheimer captioned a picture of the two.
Talk of a sequel to "Top Gun" have plagued Hollywood for years, with no substantial news about the second film until last year when Cruise said it would be "fun" to jump back into the series again, according to Entertainment Weekly. Finally, Skydance CEO David Ellison officially confirmed that "Top Gun 2" was on the way back in June with Cruise attached to star again, according to People.
"There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick," Ellison told Collider. "Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today."
In November 2015, original "Top Gun" actor Val Kilmer announced on Facebook that he was offered to reprise his role as the Iceman, even though he later backtracked on his words and stated that he "jumped the gun."
Bruckheimer's latest Tweet could mean that the highly-anticipated sequel may finally be taking off!
