Artist and baker Isabella Giancarlo dealt with her breakup rather creatively. Instead of sulking and feeling sorry for herself, she turned to what she does best and came up with an awe-inspiring photo series featuring desserts.
People try to get over failed relationships differently, and while some may indulge in ice cream and other desserts to feel better, others lose their appetite when they're nursing a broken heart. Still, others like Giancarlo unleash their energy into creative endeavors like baking. But for the artist, she didn't just create desserts, she poured her feelings into the pies, cakes and cookies she baked to tell her story.
Giancarlo documented everything on the Instagram account eatyrheartsout after going through a breakup last spring. Then, she later encouraged others to do the same by submitting "words remembered from heartbreak."
"How could I sweeten words that initially took my appetite away?" she said about the idea for her creative outlet. "I asked my friends for their heartbreak quotes and felt those familiar pangs."
From baking desserts that expressed her failed relationship, she later baked sweets based on contributions by friends and strangers. "I think the desserts serve as fleeting memorials to past relationships and function as a sweet way to process something as emotionally taxing as a break-up," she said.
Giancarlo picked desserts as her medium to symbolize eating one's feelings. "Engage with the uncomfortable, sticky feelings of a broken heart. Gorge in feelings that are so often dismissed as self-indulgent," she said.
Some of the words are downright honest, and Giancarlo admits that most people smile or cringe at her photo series. However, her little project has also highlighted how universal breakup feelings are, and that regardless of race, age or sexuality, everyone can relate to the same things when it comes to being brokenhearted.
Below are some examples of Giancarlo's breakup desserts photo series. Pass the word to anyone you know who might be going through a breakup and can use this as a perk-me-up:
