Girls Scouts of the USA know how to sell cookies and their latest ad campaign proves it. The business-savvy Girl Scouts are capitalizing on Leonardo DiCaprio's first Oscar win last month to sell even more cookies this season.
The scouting organization asked potential cookie buyers to "Be like Leo," mimicking the popular "Be Like Bill" meme, who was smart enough to buy Girl Scout Cookies and then ended up winning Best Lead Actor for his role in "The Revenant." It was his first win ever, 22 years after his first nomination.
"This is Leo," read the sign pictured on the Girl Scout Cookies official Facebook page. "Leo wants an Oscar/Leo buys Girl Scout Cookies at the awards/Leo wins an Oscar/Leo is smart/Be like Leo/Buy Girl Scout Cookies."
Oscars host Chris Rock invited the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles to sell cookies during the 88th Annual Academy Awards. They raised $65,243 through sales of the cookies and generous donations. Other big name buyers included Mindy Kaling, Olivia Munn and Aaron Rodgers, Kate Winslet and Vice President Joe Biden. DiCaprio was caught eating a box of Trefoils.
Rock asked the audience "to reach into your millionaire pockets" and buy some Girl Scout Cookies so his daughters' troop (who live in New Jersey) could finally win the highest fundraiser. The 51-year-old comedian even called out the leader of a rival troop, Linda Spradley Dunn, to help his girls finally beat her group.
"The number wasn't the point. Other than beating [Dunn], the gag came out of a very real situation," Oscars producer David Hill told Entertainment Weekly. "Chris' daughters are in the Girl Scouts, while he is in L.A. working on the show. They never win for the highest fundraiser. I can solve both of these problems. Who doesn't love Girl Scout cookies? My kids were handing out Girl Scout cookies to all the celebrities around them."
If you want to "be like Leo" and buy Girl Scout Cookies but don't know a Girl Scout, visit the Girl Scouts of the USA website. The "Find Cookies!" took helps customers find where Girl Scouts are selling cookies in their area just by inputting their zip code.
