Some specs for a mysterious new smartphone from Samsung have shown up on benchmark results at GFXBench that might be the first official indications that the successor to the company's flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S4, might be on its way.
According to CNET, rumors have been circulating for a while that the upcoming Galaxy S5 will feature a unibody metal design, a 16-megapixel camera, 3GB of RAM and an accelerated release schedule that could put it on track to be unveiled in as little as two to three months.
The new specs for the mystery phone that's showed up online, if they are true and apply to the rumored Galaxy S5, the new model will run on Android 4.4 KitKat on what appears to be a Snapdragon 800 processor running 2.5GHz. What makes a lot of analysts and insiders raise an eyebrow at the specs is the inclusion of a 1440p display which, according to CNET, is a 2,560x1,440-pixel resolution - sometimes called 2K HD.
These specs, if true, lend a lot of credence to many rumors we've heard about the Galaxy S5 in recent months. The screen would work with the rumored 5-inch display with a pixel density of up to 560. Claims that the battery will be a 4,000mAh start to make a little more sense as well.
It's worth noting that even if these leaked specs do turn out to be for the Galaxy S5, it doesn't necessarily mean they'll all make the final cut of the device when it hits store shelves sometime next year. While many are cautiously optimistic about the specs for this phone and the future of the flagship lineup of smartphones from the South Korean tech giant, this could all be a hoax, high-end prototype or the guts of a completely different phone model. Only time will tell.
