"Little People, Big World" stars Matt and Amy Roloff have decided announce their separation after more than two decades of marriage.
The couple has four children together: twins Jeremy and Zack, 23, Molly, 20, and Jacob, 17. The reality show followed the lives of the family since 2006 including Matt Roloff's DUI arrest in 2007. However, TMZ reports alcohol was not a factor in the couple's separation.
"Though we have weathered many storms together, we recently made the tough decision to engage in a trial separation," the couple said in a statement to PEOPLE magazine. "Matt remains living on the farm in our guest house and we work together everyday on the farm, on our business endeavors and most importantly, raising our amazing children."
Matt explained to PEOPLE magazine he knew it was time to separate once the tension proved to be too much for the family last Thankgiving.
"Amy and I had a lot of tension so right around Thanksgiving. I thought I would move over to the bridal house for a little bit and we'll try that. Amy and I stuck it out for years and years when maybe we shouldn't have. I never quite felt at home in my own home so something needed to change," Matt said. "We needed to try something different."
Though Matt said he needed a change, Amy told PEOPLE she's sad he's leaving and the couple doesn't know how they will work out their issues.
"It's not my choice for him to leave. I am saddened by it. We don't have a plan as far as how we are going to work this out so it's not going to be easy," Amy said.
TMZ reports divorce isn't in the cards for the couple yet, but they are living apart to see if it is what they truly want.
