Times continue to get tougher for Arsenal. According to the Mirror, striker Danny Welbeck is out for several months following a recent knee surgery setback. The timing of the injury could not have come at a worse time for the Gunners.
Arsenal failed to sign a single outfield player during this past transfer season, only adding goalkeeper Petr Cech from Chelsea. Without Welbeck, the level of attacking options for the Gunners has seriously plummeted.
"It had been hoped he would avoid surgery but after increasing his training workload, the injury to his cartilage did not respond as well as hoped and the decision was taken last week for him to undergo surgery by a leading specialist in the field," said a statement on Arsenal's team website.
Up until this latest development, Arsenal hoped Welbeck would only miss a few matches this season and return stronger than before, according to the Mirror. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger looked to develop Welbeck into a central striker for the club. Unfortunately, that dream is once again on hold.
Arsenal's lack of production during transfer season really appears to be the downfall of this coming season. The Gunners are the only "Big 5" club to not sign an outfield player. The move shocked many, especially with the lack of depth at striker. Paris Saint-Germain striker Edison Cavani was rumored as a target, but no official move ever occurred.
If Arsenal want to remain in contention for a Premier League title this season, its goals must come from midfield players and lone striker Oliver Giroud. It does not look good for the Gunners the rest of the way.
