An engine of a jet plane caught fire as it equipped itself for takeoff on Thursday, with more than 100 passengers immediately leaving the engulfed plane using emergency slides.
Fuel from the plane, which was heading towards Caracas, Venezuela from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., had leaked before take off, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, Reuters reported.
The fire began at around 12:45 p.m. Fourteen people were initially reported injured, with one suffering "serious burn injuries" and others enduring "bumps and bruises." All of the passengers were expected to make a recovery, and rescuers are still examining other people who were rescued from the flight.
As of Thursday, two of the 17 taken to a nearby hospital were released. Included in the 17 was a child and a trauma patient, most likely the burn victim, according to CNN.
The airport had tweeted it would be closed for the time being "due to the recent aircraft incident" as other flights would experience long-hour delays, Allan Siegel, a spokesperson for the airport said, according to the New York Daily News The airport re-opened by 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The airport then established a crisis center and flew in added airline agents to facilitate getting the passengers to their respective destinations, Dynamic Airlines operations director Don Dodson said, according to the Associated Press.
Dynamic is an airline that connects cities namely Fort Lauderdale and New York and countries such as Venezuela and Guyana and has been operating for the past five years.
