Nexus 5 Release Date: Google Unveils Its Newest Flagship Smartphone For Every Carrier Except Verizon Wireless

Google on Thursday finally took the wraps off of its latest flagship smartphone, the Nexus 5, which comes loaded with a lot of new high-end features and specifications, not the least of which is the fact that it comes fully loaded with the new Android 4.4 KitKat operating system, which also debuted today.

The main thing that CNET points out in its coverage of the new device is that it will be available and sold through all major service providers including AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. So far, only Verizon Wirless has opted out carrying the new device.

With Google trying to get a foothold in the already saturated smartphone market, having a broader distribution of carries is critical if the company wants to compete with the likes of the iPhone 5S and the Galaxy S4.

The device will be sold for an unsubsidized (without a 2-year contract) for $349 for the 16GB version and $399 for the 32GB version. It is available completely unlocked through the Google Play Store in ten countries.

The LG Manufacture hand set has a 4.95-inch 1,920 X 1,080 display, an 8 megapixel camera on the rear and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. The Nexus 5 is equipped with a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM a 2,300mAh battery with wireless charging.

The new Android 4.4 KitKat operating system isn't a huge upgrade from the Jelly Bean predecessor but there are a few noteworthy features including choosing a default text messaging app.

Google and LG's Nexus 5 is available now thorugh the Google Play Store in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan and Korea. The phone can also be purchased through Best Buy and Radio Shack as well as all of the major carriers, with the exception of Verizon Wireless.
