Rachel Dolezal - the former chapter president of the NAACP in Washington state and civil rights activist who made headlines for lying about her race - gave birth to her third child Tuesday. "Today, we welcomed the newest addition... Langston Attickus, born on 2/16/16, a healthy and perfect little guy with two proud big bros and a happy momma. (named after Langston Hughes & Crispus Attucks)," said Dolezal on Facebook while also sharing a photo of her newborn's footprints.
Dolezal also shared an image of her baby strapped into a car seat while wearing a knit hat and sweater on her private Instagram page, according to TMZ. She did not reveal the identity or ethnicity of the child's father, and there was no further information made available.
Despite the happy news, most media publications are focusing on Dolezal's decision to name her son after legendary black poet/author and social activist Langston Hughes.
Several sites are reporting that the baby's middle name actually comes from the "To Kill a Mockingbird" character Atticus Finch - a white lawyer who defended a black man who was wrongly accused of raping a white girl. "As for the stray 'k' in Attickus - our educated guess is it's a mash-up with Crispus Attucks... a black man widely held to be [the] first casualty of the American revolution," said TMZ.
Dolezal announced her pregnancy in September. She is also the mother of two sons, ages 21 and 13, the youngest of which was with ex-husband Kevin Moore.
Last June, Dolezal's parents exposed their daughter for lying about being born black and showed evidence that she was biologically white. During an interview on "The Real," Dolezal admitted she was born white, but identifies herself as black.
"I acknowledge that I was born biologically white to white parents, but I identify as black," she said. "I think that sometimes how we feel is more important than how we're born - and blackness can be defined as philosophical, cultural, biological. It's a lot of things to a lot of different people."
The controversy surrounding Dolezal forced her to resign as leader of the Spokane, Wash., chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The Spokane City Council also removed Dolezal from her position as head of the police oversight commission for having an "intimidating and harassing behavior."
