Drake has been teasing his new album “Views From the 6” for a couple of months now. Today, he finally released two new songs, both of which are expected to be on the forthcoming album.
The first song, “Pop Style,” features The Throne, aka Kanye West and Jay Z. The name The Throne is a reference to West and Jay Z’s 2011 collaborative album, “Watch the Throne,” which gave fans hits such as “No Church in the Wild” and “Ni--as in Paris.” Drake’s second song, “One Dance,” features Wizkid and Kyla.
“Pop Style” features a trap-heavy beat that has Drake deliver the first verse before he passes the mic over to Jay Z, whose short verse is sandwiched in-between Drake’s and West’s. The 29-year-old previously referenced both rappers in his song “Summer Sixteen” and has a writing credit on West’s song “30 Hours” off his new album “The Life of Pablo” (but he does not rap on the track). The other song, “One Dance,” is very different from the first jam, as Drake sings alongside Nigerian rapper Wizkid and Filipino R&B singer Kyla.
The release of the two new songs comes just weeks after Drake surprised fans at SXSW in Austin, Texas, with a concert. At the time, he played no new songs, but told the crowd that “Views From the 6” was coming and “I hope you enjoy that s--t.” He also promised the crowd that he would tour behind the upcoming album, but did not specify dates.
Last year, the rapper released two mix tapes, “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” and “What a Time to Be Alive” (which was a collaboration with Future). Drake’s forthcoming album has been in the works since 2014 and is in reference to his hometown of Toronto, which he calls “The 6.” Most recently, the rapper dropped “Hotline Bling,” which was one of the biggest songs of 2015. He is also featured on the latest hit Rihanna song, “Work.”
The Toronto rapper announced the release of both tunes on Twitter along with the hashtag #VIEWS. Both songs are available for purchase on iTunes now.
Drake’s highly-anticipated album “Views From the 6” is expected to drop at some point this month.
