PS4 vs. Xbox One: Sony Announces 4.2 Million Consoles Sold Compared To Xbox's 3 Million

Sony revealed on Monday that it has sold more than 4.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles by Dec. 28 of 2013. This doubles the console's previous sales figures of 2.1 million on Dec. 1. According to reports, those numbers represent the system's worldwide performance.

In comparison to its rival, Microsoft's Xbox One, which announced that it sold more than 3 million Xbox One consoles worldwide by the end of 2013, according to reports from VentureBeat.

"The momentum of the PS4 system keeps getting stronger and we couldn't be more thrilled gamers worldwide are enjoying the incredibly immersive gaming experiences along with deep social capabilities and entertainment provided by our network ," Sony Computer Entertainment boss Andrew House said in a statement. "After a remarkable launch, we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and continuing to explore the power of the PS4 system by adding new features and services, including PlayStation Now, in 2014."

Sony's sales success stories didn't end there. While its hardware is doing nicely, its game sales are through the roof. During the same period, 9.7 million PlayStation 4 games were sold both at retail and digitally via the PlayStation Network. According to IGN, "Call of Duty: Ghosts," "Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag," "Battlefield 4," "FIFA 14" and "Killzone: Shadow Fall" are among the best-selling games on the new console.

Sony also took the opportunity to reveal at CES 2014 that its PlayStation Plus subscriptions have increased more than 90 percent since the launch of the PlayStation 4 back in November.

It appears that, so far in the console wars, Sony is winning the battle against Microsoft. This is either due to the fact that Sony launched the PlayStation 4 in the U.S. ahead of the Xbox One, the fact that the PS4 has a $100 cheaper price tag than the Xbox One or just the fact that the PlayStation has more loyal fans of the system.
